Fall Tryout Info

We're reposting the tryout/miscellaneous information sheet for newcomers. Lots of good information!

FITNESS EXPECTATIONS:

We have fitness and conditioning minimums for varsity and junior varsity selection. All players must participate in fitness even if they do not expect to be selected for the varsity or junior varsity teams. The high school soccer season is too short for student athletes to expect to "get into shape" during the season. We usually play our first game only 11 days after tryouts begin. It takes at least eight weeks to get in "game" shape. The average high school varsity soccer player can run more than 5.5 miles a game. Prospects need to come to tryouts already in game shape or they will more than likely subject themselves to injury. We want kids healthy and fit so they can participate and have fun!

WHEN ARE THE SUMMER TRAINING SESSIONS?

Summer training began on June 23, 2010 and will continue each Wednesday morning at Greenlake for the duration of the summer. This, by no means, is enough running or soccer to be sufficient for the fall season. We highly encourage kids to run on their own, in smaller groups, both long and short (sprint) distances. In addition, getting many touches on the ball on your own time is crucial. The more fit you are, the better prepared you are for soccer 5-6 days per week for 10-12 weeks straight in the fall. Injuries really put a cramp in this brief season.

DO I HAVE TO GO TO SUMMER WORKOUTS?

Summer workouts are optional, but highly recommended. A significant amount of important preparation for a successful soccer season involves the summer sessions. Also, it is a great opportunity to meet the other student athletes, coaches and make an impression.

WHEN ARE TRYOUTS?

Official tryouts start Monday, Aug. 23, 2010 at 7:30 a.m.at Magnuson, Field 5. Please refer to the calendar for any other scheduling questions. We typically do double days during the first week to help us get a full scope of the skills and fitness of each athlete.

HOW MANY TEAMS WILL THERE BE?

There will be two teams for the fall 2010 season: Varsity and Junior Varsity.

ARE THERE PLAYER CUTS?

Yes, we traditionally have more kids than there are spots available. That said, there are many spots to be filled so prospective participants shouldn’t be derailed.

ARE ALL TRYOUT DATES MANDATORY?

Yes. Summer jobs and vacations can be planned around the August 23-September 2, 2010 tryout/preseason period. Each player must have 10 days of training before a game to be eligible. Be sure to consider tryout dates when planning summer vacations. Missing tryout sessions for any reason may jeopardize your chances of making a team. This includes missing due to non-registration. Please let your parents/guardian know how important tryout participation is to your goals of playing soccer at RHS.

IF I AM SICK OR INJURED SHOULD I STILL COME TO TRYOUTS?

Injured student athletes should still come to tryouts if they are to be considered for placement on a team. If a student athlete is too sick to come to tryouts, they MUST contact the coaching staff or team manager. In addition, all injuries need to go through our Athletic Trainer, Andrew Little.

HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED?

Team coaches and assistant coaches help with the evaluation process. Each student will have ample opportunity to showcase her skills, soccer knowledge and fitness at tryouts. Specifically, the coaches look to evaluate the four components of a soccer player: (1) technical ability - speed of play, successful application of skill at a high speed and while under pressure (2) tactical awareness and application - speed of thought, ability to read the game and make decisions that are best for the team (3) physical development and conditioning - speed, quickness, strength, agility, aerobic capacity (4) psychological - maturity, competitive spirit, attentiveness, leadership, communication, mental toughness, cooperation.

· Roster size and composition: We have a moving roster for each week. Therefore, spots will be earned during training prior to the game based on effort, performance, attitude and health.

· All student athletes, regardless of their grade level, are eligible to make varsity.

· Student athletes who do not make a team are encouraged to continue their participation in soccer through alternative opportunities or to go out for another RHS fall sport. The coaches are available to discuss these opportunities if a spot is not offered on a team.

· Because a student athlete was on varsity or junior varsity last year does not guarantee she will make varsity or junior varsity this year.

· We typically are able to post tryout results within the first five days.

ATHLETIC REGISTRATION

Get you physical during the summer and turn in all of your paperwork before August 10 to ensure that your paperwork gets processed on time. As previously mentioned, www.RHSseattle.org has the pertinent information necessary to register for athletics at Roosevelt. Athletic Registration is your responsibility! Without it, you cannot participate in Roosevelt Athletics.

If you have any other questions, please be sure to read through the entire blog, refer to the calendar, and then contact the team manager or coach at rooseveltsoccer at gmail dot com.

* Assuming we have Magnuson Field during the day, as we did last fall.
